After Delivery
The Best for Baby
After delivery you and your baby will be moved to a private postpartum room. We encourage you to spend as much time as possible with your newborn; however a nursery is also available. Your nurse will be available to help with your new baby and answer questions you may have. If you baby should need special care or treatment, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, provides where highly skilled nursing staff, neonatal physicians, and the most advanced equipment is available.
Following your recovery in labor and delivery, you will be escorted to a private room on the postpartum care unit. Postpartum amenities and services include the following:
- The staff will ensure both the mother and baby are doing well and provide plenty of time for mothers who choose to
- breastfeed their baby. (Babies are very alert during the first hour after delivery.)

Newborn Security Measures
The safety and protection of your baby are of utmost importance to us. The following measures have been put into place to help keep your baby safe. Our staff will review these with you when you arrive on the Couplet Care Unit.
- As soon as your baby is born, baby has identifying bands placed on his/her wrist and ankle. Mother and her partner are also given bracelets that match the ones placed on baby’s wrist and ankle. Each time your baby is moved from your room or returned to you from the Nursery, the identification bands will be checked to make sure they match. Please do not remove any of these bands. They are important for your baby’s safety during the hospital stay. These bands are checked again prior to discharge.
- When your baby is born, a small box shaped sensor is attached to his/her umbilical cord clamp. This devise sounds an alarm if your baby is moved close to any of the stairs or elevators in our area.
- The Labor and Delivery area and the Couplet Care area are always in “lock-down” mode. In order to enter these areas, the door has to be unlocked by the staff inside or the correct code must be entered on the keypad.
All staff members authorized to transfer your baby will wear Baptist Health System nametags with their names printed on a pink background.Release your infant only to those having the appropriate nametags when the baby leaves your room. Security cameras are strategically located at elevators, stairways and exits.
- Finally, if your baby leaves your room for any reason, the baby must be in a crib. No infants are to be carried in the hallways by staff, parents, or guests.
If you have any questions about our security measures, please ask your nurse.
